Highway Advisory Radio

Picture of a Florida Roadway
The Florida Department of Transportation maintains a statewide system of Traveler Information Stations, which are commonly called the Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) stations. The system is used to provide important information to the traveling public. HAR stations transmit in the AM broadcast band and are used in the case of an emergency situation such as a hurricane, fire, contraflow or other serious traffic conditions.

HARs are of two types - permanently mounted at one location (fixed) and those that can be located at temporary locations (portable). Examples of each are the HAR stations at the Florida welcome stations that are permanent and the trailer mounted HARs often seen at construction sites. The portable HAR sites usually include a Changeable Message Sign to inform the traveling public which radio station to tune in.
