Traffic Engineering and Operations Office
Signals are essential traffic
control devices at intersections and other key locations on Florida's roads and
highways. Their primary purpose is the effective regulation of traffic movements
to provide a safe, orderly flow for both vehicles and pedestrians. The FDOT
utilizes signal systems that reflect many important advances in both equipment
technology and operation in recent years.
The FDOT is authorized under Chapter 316 of the Florida Statutes and the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) to provide the state with a uniform system of traffic signals and signs. Florida has incorporated by state administrative rule the MUTCD, which includes standards for traffic signals and their use. The FDOT's Traffic Engineering Research Laboratory in Tallahassee performs extensive testing on traffic signals and approves them for sale and installation on Florida's roads.
