Traffic Engineering and Operations Office
In 2005 the FDOT ITS Section began providing technical engineering expertise to enhance the planning and project management activities at RAPTS, the Resource for Advanced Public Transportation Systems based at the University of South Florida's Center for Urban Transportation Research. The ITS Section is actively working to bring more transit information into the state's 511 Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) being deployed. Several of the District ITS programs have been successful in integrating public transportation projects in District ITS efforts.
Another initiative is the use of transit signal priority technology at certain intersections, which will improve transit travel time and reliability. Transit vehicle location technology is being used on more fixed-route vehicles, and the FDOT also seeks to better coordinate transit operations with the traffic management functions at TMCs.
