Structures Design Office - Ocean Avenue Bascule Bridge

Temporary Dutch-style Bascule Bridge

One of the unique features involved in the construction of the temporary bridge was the use of a highly specialized crane barge capable of lifting 650 tons.  The equipment was brought specifically for this project from Louisiana to lift the 160~ ton bridge deck and the 235~ton balance frame into place on the Dutch-style temporary drawbridge. The delicate operation of lifting nearly 400-tons of steel into place required the closure of the Intracoastal Waterway to all marine traffic for two days.  Visitors and news media from around the world were on hand to witness the event.

This type of movable span features an overhead counterweight typically used in Europe. This movable span type was chosen for the S.E. 17th Street site for the following reasons:
- Ability to prefabricate the major elements.
- Low initial cost and low maintenance cost.
- The ability to relocate this structure in modular sections.
- Eliminates the need for a pit pier, so that the bridge can be relocated to a site with low vertical clearance.
