State Materials Office
What is Commercial Inspection?
Commercial Inspection is inspection and/or testing performed by the
Department hired Consultants to assure that specialized construction
and maintenance materials/procedures/features meet specifications.
Why is this done?
It is not economical for the Department to maintain staff with a broad range of skills and equipment to meet this highly variable workload, but it is essential the Department assure compliance with construction and maintenance requirements.
How is this done?
The Commercial Inspection Section (CI) of the State Materials Office (SMO) has contracts with consultant testing and inspection firms staffed and equipped to perform the services from their offices located through the United States.
When is this done?
We review documents directed to the SMO at Gainesville. If any of the materials/features/procedures of the work appear to require commercial inspection. we request District assistance in securing documents and funding to allow us to arrange consultant inspection services to meet your needs.
What is required of project management?
If your work contains structural metal fabrication requiring welding, see “Florida Department of Transportation Standard Specification for Road and Bridge Construction 1999”, section 460-6. You should contact CI right away to discuss this.
Is this the limit of CI services?
No. While our primary activities are in the area of structures our consultants offer a broad range of testing, inspection and engineering services. We will be pleased to assist you in arranging for these services upon request.
