Florida's Bridge Information |
The Florida Department of Transportation bridge program has a solid safety record. The Safety and Preservation of the State Highway System is the top priority of the Florida Department of Transportation. The FDOT staff involved with designing, constructing, inspecting and maintaining our bridge inventory is committed to ensuring these structures remain safe. While we are confident our bridges are safe, the FDOT bridge staff is always vigilant in maintaining safety and seeks to always improve our program. The State of Florida ranks among the lowest in the nation for percent of bridges that are considered "structurally deficient." In Florida, this does not mean a bridge is unsafe. If a bridge is unsafe, we do not hesitate to close it immediately. This site will be updated quarterly. |
Underwater Bridge Inspections |
Florida is decentralized, with each of its districts running its own bridge inspection efforts, including the underwater bridge inspections. The underwater bridge inspections are performed by a combination of in house teams and consultant efforts. An entry level underwater bridge inspector will be a commercial diver. Five of the districts have in-house dive teams. The senior diver is generally also a certified bridge inspector. The Department provides training in bridge inspection and underwater bridge inspection, so with experience the entry level diver can become certified as a bridge inspector. The majority of our dives are in relatively shallow water and they are accomplished by either surface supplied or scuba. However, sometimes penetration dives are required for culverts.
