Florida's Unified Roadway Basemap Initiative

Every jurisdiction and often agencies and offices within agencies have independent GIS systems that do not easily interact. Although they can often exchange data the accuracy of the data is often corrupted due to the differing sources of the foundational information that the base maps are built upon. This frequently shows as bridge information plotting where there is no river or road to cross and intersection data plotting mid-block. Different with crash data being collected with one datum and roadway data collected in another this data is difficult to analyze. With the new requirements form SAFETEA-LU to address High Risk Rural Roads and identify the 5% of the worst safety problems regardless of roadway ownership it is necessary that a uniform foundation be provided for consistent data exchange.

This project will facilitate data collection of length and point items; establish methods for data sharing; and establish partnerships and cooperative agreements with various agencies to ensure data accuracy and consistency. The end product could be a comprehensive statewide roadway network accessible over the internet, managed and maintained through documented procedures, standards, partnerships and cooperative agreements.
