   Project Funding Period
The Highway Safety Grant Program is federally funded and is administered on a Federal fiscal year basis (October 1 - September 30). Therefore, all Highway Safety projects terminate on September 30. While projects are approved on a yearly basis, projects are eligible for funding for a maximum of three years, as specified under National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines. There are a few exceptions approved by NHTSA for extension of a project beyond the three year period. However, most projects are to be funded for a maximum of three years, and should become self-sufficient when the Section 402 funding terminates. The ideal procedure for achieving self-sufficiency is to decrease the federal share during each year of a grant. For more on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's guidelines, access their homepage here. (Note: Clicking on this link will open another instance of the web browser).

For example, providing 100% funding in the first year, 75% the second year and 50% the third year. This would allow agencies to assume the cost of the project over a three year period.
