Highway Safety Grant Program - Impaired Driving

Impaired Driving


Police Car LightsThe term impaired driver refers to person(s) who are operating a motor vehicle while affected by alcohol and/or other drugs, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, or illicit substances. Programs receiving grant funding in this priority area are focused four major program related categories:

  1. Prevention: Education and Enforcement programs aimed at deterring impaired driving.

  2. Criminal Justice System Support: Enforcement of DUI Laws, Training for Prosecution and Adjudication of DUI offenders, and Administrative Sanctions and Driver Licenses Programs

  3. Communication: Public awareness and education activities targeting at risk demographics and geographic locations.

  4. Alcohol and other drug use: Screening, Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation: DUI Courts and counseling services

Items eligible for funding under this category may include: in-car video systems, public awareness materials, and DUI checkpoint equipment, including trailers, light towers, traffic cones, arrow boards, and generators.

 

All program areas funded with grant funds are required to have an evaluation method that will allow assessment of the funded program's level of success in reducing fatalities and injuries.
