Florida East Coast Railroad 1935

| The Florida Special debuted in January 1888 and ran for 84 years. It was the first electronically lighted and vestibuled train in the country. It was built to ferry the wealthy, winter-weary northerner to sunny Florida. The Florida Special was known for its red carpet treatment including fresh pompano on the northbound menus and the Miami Daily Herald under every stateroom door. The photo features Mayor E.G. Sewell of Miami greeting "Miss Florida" Mary Elise Weems. |
