The Sikorsky S-40 was placed in operation by Pan American Airways in 1931. The plane, which carried 36 passengers and traveled at 110 miles per hour, operated the trans-Caribbean routes. The S-40s were the first four-engine aircraft that were regularly used in commercial air service by a major American airline.
