ADA Program Overview
The following is an
overview of the FDOT ADA/Accessibility Program:
ADA Program Participants:
- ADA Coordinator - Manages the Program from Tallahassee
- District ADA Coordinators
- Oversee the Program at the District level
- Project Managers, Project Administrators, project staff - Implement Program
requirements at the project level
- Design Consultants, Contractors, CEIs, Inspectors - Ensure that
accessibility elements and features are included in all phases of
transportation projects
ADA Program Responsibilities:
- Provide accessible services, programs & activities under Title IIa of the
ADA
- Provide accessible facilities (Titles II & III) -
Roadways, bridges, sidewalks, buildings, sites, parking
- Provide technical support to professional staff, consultants & contractors
- Remain up-to-date on changes and revisions to the ADA and accessibility
requirements related to transportation services and facilities
- Provide training to in-house staff, consultants & contractors
FDOT has developed multiple courses to address implementation of ADA
requirements across the many phases of Department-managed projects and
facilities
- Modify Department design standards for roadways, structures & buildings
- Coordinate with other state agencies, local governments and other parties in
the implementation of ADA/accessibility requirements across shared services
& facilities
Respond to public requests, comments & complaints - provide corrective
actions

- Florida is one of the first states to have text telephones (TDDs/TTYs) at
all interstate rest areas and Turnpike service plazas.
- Family (unisex) restrooms are being added to rest areas

Currently in about 1/2 of all interstate rest areas - Ultimately in all rest
areas
- Some Department Standards go beyond ADA requirements.
