How was the FIHS Created?

  • 1990 - State Legislation.-- Chapter 338.001
  • Planned, built and maintained by FDOT in cooperation with local governments.

  • Connecting global markets through airports, seaports and rail terminals
  • Composed of 4,075 miles of existing and planned multi-modal transportation corridors. See Maps.
  • 3,966 miles exist, but some require upgrading. See Maps.
  • 109 miles of new FIHS roads have been identified, but are not built.
  • When complete, about 55% of the FIHS will be limited-access roads similar to Interstate highways.

What Does the FIHS Do?

  • Carries 30 % of the total traffic on only 3 % of Florida's roads.
  • Includes special corridors for through travel, buses, passenger rail service and vehicles with more than one occupant.
  • Makes travel safer and more convenient through new technologies such as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
  • Provides the quality of mobility necessary to maintain Florida's position as the world's number-one vacation destination.
  • Provides an interconnected system that links major seaports, airports, rail, and other intermodal facilities, improving access to domestic and international markets, and enhancing Florida's competitiveness in the global economy.

What Will the FIHS Cost and When Will it be Finished?

  • The FIHS will be systematically improved in stages. The extent and timing of the improvements depend upon the availability of funding.
