Southwest Florida International Airport Collector/Distributor System

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) submitted an application for the Southwest Florida International Airport Collector/Distributor System project for Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

This critical project in southwest Florida accomplishes two strategic goals for the state and the nation: (1) improving our nation's transportation infrastructure by allowing the movement of people and goods to interact in a more efficient and mulitimodal manner and (2) creating vital and needed jobs in this economically distressed area.

Significant investment has recently been made within the transportation network in southwest Florida over the past several years. The largest single transportation roadway contract in Florida's history at the time was recently awarded to improve 33 miles of interstate adjacent to the airport at a cost of $430 million. In addition, the first new international airport terminal designed and constructed to post 9/11 standards at a cost of $438 million has also just recently opened. This project then is the link to combine these two critical statewide projects together for a truly seamless multimodal transportation network.
