How To's and Frequently Asked Questions for Communities

What funding is available for highway beautification? Who pays for what? How are projects funded and selected?

Consistent with Section 334.044(26), Florida Statues, no less than 1.5% of the amount contracted for construction projects in each fiscal year is allocated to beautification programs. Decisions about individual projects are made by FDOT District Offices in cooperation with community leaders. Communities seeking funding for highway beautification should contact the appropriate District Landscape Architect.

The FHBC was created by the 1987 Legislature when it enacted Sections 339.24 and 339.2405, Florida Statutes. This legislation placed the seven-member, Governor appointed Council within the Florida Department of Transportation. The primary duty of the Council is to review; score, and rank submitted Highway Beautification Grant Applications. Based on the results of this annual review process and the availability of funds, the Secretary of the Department of Transportation may distribute grants. No single grant can exceed 10% of total available funds. Applicants may apply for more than one grant.

An Application, as well as additional information about the grant program, can be found here, or at any Florida Department of Transportation Office. The Florida Highway Beautification Council can be reached at electronic mail, 850.414.5267 or 605 Suwannee Street, MS-37 Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0450

Before preparing a grant application, please contact the District Grant Coordinator.
