Background
In 1992, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) implemented a Statewide Pavement Management Program (SPMP) to improve knowledge of pavement conditions at public airports in the Florida aviation system, identify maintenance needs at individual airports, automate information management, and establish standards to address future needs. Furthermore, this new program was aimed to assist airports comply with Public Law 103-305, which required airports establish an airfield pavement management program when applying for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funding. The 1992 SPMP also provided valuable information for establishing and performing pavement maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R). More...

Innovative Technology
Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport installed a safety system that will stop or slow down aircraft at the end of Runway 9L/27R. The system is known as Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS). This system consists of crushable concrete beds that essentially stop aircraft in the runway overrun areas and prevents the aircraft from causing damage to the areas surrounding the runway. In addition, this safety feature is a way for airports to comply with FAA runway standards. More...

Airfield Pavement Management Field Manual
The principal objectives of this manual is to assist the airfield pavement inspector in determining the types, severities, and quantities of each distress they may find at the airports. The guidelines and procedures from this manual are directly derived from the AC 150/5380-6B or ASTM 5340-11. Illustrations of airfield pavement distresses that are similar to those typically found in Florida airside pavements are provided. A complete overview and pictures of the distresses and examples for airport pavements illustrating Low, Medium, High severities can also be found in this Airfield Pavement Inspection Manual.
