The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) supports educational outreach efforts through documents such as the Florida Flyer, Florida Aeronautical Chart, and the Florida Airport Directory. The Aviation Office supports educational events such as the Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-In and Expo, the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo, the National Business Aviation Association Annual Meeting and Conference, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Aviation Summit.  The Aviation Office also supports education and training through the Airfield Pavement Inspection Training Course, Airfield Distress Repair Training Course, Stormwater General Permit 62-.341.449 Training.

 

Florida Airport Directory
Pursuant to Section 332.006(7), FS, the 2024 Florida Airport Directory displays an aerial view of all public-use, publicly operated airports in Florida.  The Directory also contains important information on fly-in airparks, seaplane bases and all private facilities.  Data in the Directory comes from an annual public airport inspection and licensing records, private airport registration, and directly from airport owners and managers. Because maintaining and updating this data is a large undertaking, the FDOT makes no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy of information.

Each airport profile in the Florida Airport Directory includes an aerial image of the airport, contact information, runway and approach details, weather reporting capabilities, and the availability of airport services.

Florida Aeronautical Chart
Pursuant to Section 332.006(7), FS, the 2024 Florida Aeronautical Chart displays an graphical view of all public-use and some private-use airports in Florida. The Chart depicts visual information like cities, rivers, lakes, roads, railroads, powerlines, and towers as well as aeronautical information such as airports, controlled airspace, radio frequencies, aids to navigation, restricted areas, and airways. The entire state of Florida is presented on one chart at the 1:1,000,000 scale with terminal areas of the Jacksonville, Miami - Fort Lauderdale,  Orlando, Tampa – Saint Petersburg – Clearwater areas presented at 1:500,000 scale. Paper charts are an essential part of a pilot’s training and most students learn with paper charts before moving on to electronic media. The Chart is updated annually and is not intended to replace official FAA Sectional Charts for use in navigation. Because maintaining and updating this data is a large undertaking, the FDOT makes no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy of information.

Florida Aviation Professionals Academy                                                                                                                                          The Florida Aviation Professionals Academy (FAPA) provides relevant academic and technical knowledge to airports, FDOT staff, and other professionals regarding the FDOT Aviation Office's processes, policies, and operations.  This includes information related to: the foundation for new personnel in understanding aviation processes, policies, and requirements within Florida, assistance in helping personnel transition into new roles related to working with FDOT, and skill enhancement relevant to specific duties and responsibilities. FAPA modules include Introduction to FDOT Aviation and the Regulatory Environment; Florida Airports & Their Role; FDOT Program Management and the Florida Aviation Database; Florida Airport Licensing, Regulation, Airspace, and Inspections; Florida Aviation Planning; and Joint Automated Capital Improvement Program (JACIP) Overview. FAPA is a great introduction to FDOT Aviation Office and Florida’s aviation landscape for those new to the industry and those looking for a refresher.

To prepare for the in-person course, prerequisite FAPA-specific Computer-Based Training (CBT) videos were developed.  These CBT's can be viewed at https://www.airportfapa.com/cbts/. Completion of these CBT's will provide you with crucial information prior to attending FAPA, which in turn should increase the benefit of your attendance.

 

Airfield Pavement Inspection Training Course
Pursuant to Section 332.006(4), FS, the Airfield Pavement Inspection Training Course is designed to train participants to become knowledgeable airfield pavement inspectors.  Participants receive training in identifying pavement distresses, and calculating the pavement condition index (PCI), both manually and with a computer software program.  The course is split into four modules: Course Introduction, Pavement Fundamentals, Pavement Evaluation, and Field Operations.

The Airfield Pavement Inspection Training Course consists of two parts.  The first day, 8 hours, will be conducted in the classroom.  On the second day, there will be 4 hours of fieldwork.  The participants will have the opportunity to join the instructor in conducting actual airfield distress repair on the field.  The training information for this course is directly based on the guidelines and procedures from FAA, AC 150/5380-6B.

Airfield Pavement Distress Repair Training Course
Pursuant to Section 332.006(4), FS, the Airfield Pavement Distress Repair Training Course is designed to train participants in becoming efficient airfield distress repair specialists. The course gives a brief overview of general concepts surrounding airfield pavement structure and repair and the FDOT Statewide Pavement Management Program before providing technical education on the processes and methods of repairing airfield distresses.  The course educates students in the five categories of airfield pavement distress: cracking, distortion, disintegration, loss of skid resistance, and joint seal damage.  The course also provides detailed training on technical repair procedures necessary to fix these pavement distresses, and the appropriate procedure for temporary, permanent, and emergency repairs.

Stormwater General Permit Section 62-341.449, FAC Training
Pursuant to Section 332.006(7), FS, the Stormwater General Permit Section 62-341.449, FAC Training course is designed to help airport staff, engineers, environmental scientists, consultants, and regulators become more knowledgeable of the various reports and analyses recommended in FDOT’s Best Management Practices Manual on stormwater.  The course is split into several sections, including Florida Airports and Stormwater Management, Hydrology, Overland Flow and Infiltration, Chemistry and Load, Airport General Permit, Best Management Practices Manual and BMPs, and Permitting.
