TIM - Traffic Incident Management Teams

Responding effectively to incidents on the highway requires a planned and coordinated effort by many different individuals - from law enforcement and fire departments to emergency medical personnel, towing companies, spill response firms, and FDOT maintenance crews. The FDOT Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Program brings together all agencies involved in clearing an accident from the roadway. Together, they strive to make incident management safer for the responders and motorists, and work to reduce the time needed to reopen travel lanes and get traffic moving again.

TIM Teams are active in all FDOT Districts. The teams consist of representatives from responding agencies and towing and other contract service providers. The teams review past response actions and explore ways that incident management can be improved on the highways they serve. These teams also conduct training for incident responders and are active in traffic management planning for special events. The teams are open to all responders and there is no cost to attend meetings.

FDOT monitors traffic in many urban areas in Traffic Management Centers or TMC's. The TMC's are a vital part of the Department's response to traffic incidents. They are all equipped with video walls where live camera feeds from the roadways are monitored 24 hours day/7 days a week. The cameras, part of Florida's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network, provide enhanced views of the roadway. Incident response times have been reduced because the TMC operators can initiate response actions through the communications systems that are also part of the TMC. The TMC's are a key component of FDOT's traffic management operations. At the state level, the statewide TIM Team addresses specific program areas where recommendations are needed.
