Strategic Highway Safety Plan

2007 Safety Summit
The 2007 Transportation Safety Summit was held March 12-13, 2007 in Orlando.
Last year over 300 people worked together to develop the SHSP -- Florida's road map to reduce motor vehicle crashes and the deaths and injuries they cause. The hard work of implementing this plan is where "the rubber meets the road," and we need your help to accomplish the SHSP goals and objectives.

Why? 3,365 people died on our Florida roadways in 2006!

Consider what is at stake...

  • The state's fatality rate in 2006 was 1.65 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, a 4.7 percent decrease from 2005, however it is still well above the national average of 1.45 per 100 million VMT.
  • Despite increasing from 74% to 81% in 2006, Florida's safety belt use rate still lags the 82% national average.
  • We can and MUST do better! Bring your enthusiasm, knowledge, and expertise and help us develop highway safety initiatives and solutions that will save lives and prevent injuries on Florida's roads and highways.
STRATEGIC HIGHWAY SAFETY PLAN MATERIALS

Tracking Tool
The Department has created an online tool to track projects that implement Florida's Strategic Highway Safety Plan. The time and effort you devote to implementing the Plan needs to be tracked and accounted for to the Federal Highway Administration. The projects you enter will assist the Department in reporting to FHWA the state's implementation efforts.

Please take a few minutes to enter your projects (infrastructure and non-infrastructure) at the site below. If you have any questions, please call Lora Hollingsworth,P.E., at 850-245-1500. Thank you. You may access the Strategic Highway Safety Plan Tracking Tool via this link.
