Lora Hollingsworth, P.E. Chief Safety Officer
Motorcycle Safety
The Motorcycle Safety program aids to reduce motorcycle crashes
and related deaths and injuries by addressing the use of helmets and
other protective gear, proper licensing, impaired riding, rider
training, conspicuity, and motorist awareness.
In 2008, motorcyclists accounted for 6% of Florida's motoring public, yet motorcyclists and their passengers accounted for 17.8% of all traffic fatalities.
- In an effort to comprehensively address motorcycle safety in Florida, the Motorcycle Strategic Safety Plan (MSSP) was revised and Floridas first Motorcycle Safety Coalition was formed.
The purpose of the MSSP is to focus funding and resources on the areas with the greatest opportunity to reduce motorcycle crashes, fatalities and serious injuries. This five year plan provides guidance to all stakeholders concerned with improving motorcycle safety in Florida. Grant funding for Motorcycle Safety Programs will be based on those priorities outlined in the Florida Motorcycle Safety Strategic Plan (PDF 630k) Final Version April 3, 2009.
All program areas funded with
grant funds are required to have an evaluation method that will
allow assessment of the funded program's level of success in
reducing fatalities and injuries.
Ride Smart Florida is the complete resource for motorcycle riders, trainers, sponsors, local governments, law enforcement agencies, and emergency services - anyone interested in improving motorcycle safety throughout Florida.
