Florida Wildflower Program
Florida's wildflower program actually began in 1963 as the result of a contractor buying some pasture grass from a farmer to use for sod on a roadway project just south of Tallahassee. The pasture where the grass was harvested from had been over seeded with Crimson Clover in previous years to provide winter cattle forage. The spring of 1963 was perfect so it's told, and the clover produced a bumper crop of magnificent red blooms. The sight of that clover blooming by the roadside was a tremendous hit with the public, and the department was flooded with calls. We did some research, and the program went forward from there. However, there were many unsuccessful efforts over the years until, with the support of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Inc., the department funded a research project with Florida Atlantic University. Several important facts were noted, and the most promising species of wildflowers were recommended for use in the wildflower program.
